How to Help a Child Who is Scared of Swimming

How to Help a Child Who is Scared of Swimming

Water anxiety in children is far more common than many parents realise. If your child screams at the thought of swimming lessons, refuses to put their face in the water, or clings to you at the poolside, you are not alone. Here is what actually works.

Understanding Where the Fear Comes From

Fear of water in children usually has one of three root causes. Some children are simply cautious by nature — they approach new experiences carefully and water is no exception. Others have had a specific frightening experience, such as getting water in their eyes, slipping, or being pushed in. And some children pick up on parental anxiety — if you are nervous around water, your child almost certainly knows it.

Understanding the root cause helps you choose the right approach.

Never Force It

This is the most important rule. Forcing a child into water they are afraid of — even with the best intentions — almost always makes the fear worse and can set their progress back by months. The goal is to make every water experience positive, however small.

If your child had a bad experience at a lesson, it is completely reasonable to take a break and try a different approach before returning.

Start at Home

For very young children or those with significant anxiety, start in the bath. Make bath time playful — use cups to pour water gently over their hair, encourage them to blow bubbles in the water, and let them control the pace. These small experiences build the foundations of water confidence in a completely safe environment.

Choose the Right Swimming Teacher

Not all swimming teachers are equally experienced with anxious children. Look for teachers who have experience with nervous swimmers, who use patient and encouraging language, and who never rush children through activities they are not ready for.

Ask the swimming school directly before booking — a good school will be honest about whether their approach suits a nervous child.

Small Steps at the Pool

At the pool, start at the shallowest end. Let your child sit on the steps and get used to the feel of the water before moving further in. Never rush this stage — five minutes of happy splashing on the steps is worth more than a full lesson spent in tears.

Encourage your child to blow bubbles on the water surface before asking them to submerge. The transition from surface to underwater is the biggest hurdle for most nervous swimmers — bubbles on the surface is the first step.

Make Them Feel Like a Swimmer

This might seem small, but children who feel equipped feel more confident. A bright swim cap in their favourite colour, a pair of goggles they chose themselves, and a swimsuit they love genuinely make a difference to how a child approaches the pool.

JIMJOOS swim caps and goggles are available on Amazon in a range of bright colours — let your child pick their own and they will be more excited to wear them.

Celebrate Every Step

Getting in the water is a win. Putting their face in is a win. Every small step forward deserves genuine praise. Avoid comparing your child to other swimmers or expressing frustration at slow progress — children are acutely aware of adult emotions and will associate swimming with disappointment if they sense it.

When to Seek Specialist Help

If your child's fear is severe — panic attacks, extreme distress before lessons, inability to enter the pool at all — it may be worth seeking out a specialist in aquaphobia or child anxiety. Some swimming teachers specifically specialise in working with highly anxious children and take a therapeutic approach to lessons.
