Curly hair is beautiful — but it can make swim caps a real challenge. Too small and the cap pulls and hurts. Too large and water pours in. Here is everything UK parents need to know about choosing the right swim cap for curly or thick hair.
Why Curly Hair Needs Special Consideration
Curly and afro-textured hair has more volume than straight hair, which means standard swim caps simply do not accommodate it comfortably. Forcing a cap designed for fine straight hair onto thick curly hair causes three problems: it stretches the cap beyond its intended limits, it pulls painfully on the hair, and it often still lets water in at the edges.
Silicone is the Only Choice
For curly hair, silicone caps are non-negotiable. Latex caps have very little stretch and will pull and snap against thick hair. Silicone stretches significantly further, accommodates much more volume, and sits more comfortably against the scalp without gripping individual strands.
JIMJOOS swim caps are made from 100% soft silicone — they stretch far more than standard caps and are designed with extra room for children with thicker hair.
Size Up
If your child has thick or curly hair, always size up. A child who might normally wear a size for ages 3-6 will likely be more comfortable in a size for ages 7-14. The cap should sit snugly without pulling — if it feels tight at all, go larger.
The Damp Hair Trick
This is the single most useful tip for curly hair and swim caps. Before putting the cap on, dampen your child's hair thoroughly with fresh water. Wet hair compresses more easily and the cap slides on with far less resistance. Try putting a dry cap on dry curly hair and you will be fighting it for five minutes. Try it on damp hair and it takes seconds.
How to Put the Cap On
Gather the hair into a loose, low bun at the back of the head — not tight, just gathered. Hold the cap at the front with both hands and stretch it open wide before placing it over the forehead. Then pull the back of the cap down and over the bun in one smooth motion. Never try to pull the cap over loose, uncombed hair.
What About Hair Protection
Chlorine can be drying for curly hair. Before swimming, apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner or coconut oil to your child's hair before putting the cap on. This provides a barrier against chlorinated water and keeps the hair moisturised after swimming.
After Swimming
Rinse your child's hair immediately after swimming with fresh water, even if they are going home to wash it properly. Getting chlorine out quickly makes a significant difference to hair health over time.
