Choosing the Right Swim Cap for Your Child's Hair Type

Choosing the Right Swim Cap for Your Child's Hair Type

Walk into any swimming pool and you will see dozens of swim caps — but choosing the right one for your child makes a bigger difference than most parents realise. The wrong cap can pull hair, leak water, or simply refuse to stay on mid-length.

Silicone vs Latex

The two most common materials are silicone and latex. For children, silicone is almost always the better choice. It is softer, more durable, and far less likely to pull or tangle hair when removing. Latex caps are thinner and cheaper, but can cause reactions in children with latex sensitivity and tend to wear out much faster with regular pool use.

JIMJOOS swim caps are 100% silicone — designed to last through hundreds of lessons without losing their stretch or shape.

Short Hair

Lucky parents — almost any cap will work here. A standard silicone cap fits snugly and keeps short hair completely dry. Focus on getting the right size for your child's head circumference rather than worrying about hair volume.

Long Hair

Long hair needs a larger cap or a dedicated long-hair design. The trick is to gather hair into a loose bun at the back of the head before putting the cap on. Never pull the cap down over loose long hair — it will stretch the cap and leave you with a frustrated child.

Curly and Thick Hair

This is where many parents struggle. Thick or curly hair needs a larger, more flexible cap with plenty of stretch. Dampening the hair slightly before putting the cap on helps enormously. Look for caps labelled for ages 7-14 even on younger children if they have particularly thick hair.

How Often Are They Swimming?

For once-a-week lessons, any good silicone cap will last 12-18 months. For children swimming four or five times a week at club level, look for a thicker silicone cap and rotate between two caps to extend their life.

Getting the Right Fit

The cap should feel snug but not tight. If your child is complaining it hurts, it is probably too small. If water is getting in regularly, it may be too large. Our JIMJOOS range covers ages 3-6 and 7-14 to get the fit right.
