Best Time of Year to Start Swimming Lessons in the UK

Best Time of Year to Start Swimming Lessons in the UK

Many parents wait until summer to think about swimming lessons. After all, swimming feels like a summer activity. But is summer actually the best time to start? Here is the honest answer — and some practical advice on timing your child's swimming lessons in the UK.

The Honest Answer — Any Time is a Good Time

Swimming is a year-round activity in the UK. Indoor pools run lessons 52 weeks a year and the best swimming schools maintain consistent waiting lists throughout. Waiting for summer to start lessons means waiting months for a skill that could save your child's life.

That said, there are practical advantages and disadvantages to different times of year.

September — The Best Time to Start

September is the single best month to enrol your child in swimming lessons in the UK. Here is why.

Most swimming schools follow a similar term structure to the school year. New spaces typically open up in September as older children move up or leave. Enrolling in September means you join at the natural start of a new cycle, your child is likely to be placed with peers at a similar level, and the teaching groups remain consistent throughout the term.

September also gives children who are starting school for the first time a structured activity that builds confidence outside the classroom — swimming lessons are excellent for this.

January — Second Best

January is the second most common time for new spaces to open. Post-Christmas, some families drop out of lessons and spaces become available. Swimming school websites tend to update their availability in January so it is worth checking at the start of the new year.

Why Not Summer?

Summer seems logical but is actually the most challenging time to start for several reasons. Most swimming pools are busier in summer, meaning class sizes may be larger and quality can dip. Many swimming schools pause or reduce their programme in school holidays. And children who start in summer often miss the consistency needed to build confidence — frequent breaks interrupt progress.

The Waiting List Reality

Good swimming schools in the UK often have waiting lists of several months. If you want your child to start in September, contact your preferred school in the spring. Many schools open their September enrolments as early as April or May.

Outdoor vs Indoor Pools

UK outdoor pools, lidos and open water venues are seasonal — typically open from May to September. These are wonderful for building water confidence in the summer months but are not a substitute for year-round indoor lessons. Children who swim outdoors in summer and stop completely in winter lose significant progress.

Kit Up Before You Start

Before your child's first lesson, make sure they have everything they need. A well-fitting swim cap, comfortable goggles, a swimsuit and a swim bag all help children feel ready and confident from day one.
